Board Positions! Exciting opportunity to join the Common Ground Board

This call out has now closed. Thank you for your interest in joining the Common Ground Board.

Common Ground is at an exciting stage as a not-for-profit. In April we are launching our 2024-2030 strategy based on learnings developed over four years of operation. This strategy places First Nations communities at the centre of our work. It looks at ways we can strengthen the capacity of First Nations storytellers, and shift systems towards backing and centering First Nations people and communities across this continent and surrounding islands.

With our new strategy, we are recruiting for non-executive directors. These roles are essential to our governance and driving our work.

This is an identified role for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

WHO WE ARE

Common Ground is a First Nations not-for-profit and collective of First Nations people changing systems through storytelling. We first launched in 2019 as a humble collection of curated and original content found on our website. We have continued to evolve as a place of storytelling and education, to create opportunities for First Nations people to be authors on our terms.

Our vision is for a society that centres First Nations people, knowledge, Country, truth-telling and self-determination in everything. We are 100% First Nations-led and staffed. Our board includes six to nine people who oversee our governance with cultural integrity and a strong grounding in ethics and financial and legal requirements.

WHAT WE DO

Our strategy is focused on:

Amplifying and backing First Nations voices
We create opportunities for diverse First Nations voices to be authors on our terms. We create safe spaces – grounded in reciprocity and long-term relationship-building – for First Nations people to share stories, publish content and contribute to projects.

Strengthening the storytelling ecosystem
Common Ground works to strengthen the storytelling ecosystem by building power, relationships and pathways. Our intention is to add to the space, not take up space. We don’t replicate what already exists, but facilitate opportunities for First Nations people to enter the storytelling ecosystem and thrive within in.

Educating and building accountability
We know that shifting mindsets is an important part of changing systems. We bring together people and stories to create content and experiences that inform and advocate. We make resources for schools, run campaigns and back advocacy work.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Common Ground Board plays a key role in advancing our strategic objectives, strengthening our governance structures, growing our networks and supporting our development as a not-for-profit organisation.

We are seeking Board Members who bring diverse expertise and lived experience, to continue to deepen our impact while remaining strong in our planning, finances and governance.

Ideally, you will have a number of the following:

  • You have expertise that intersects with our key areas our work: place-based storytelling, digital storytelling (i.e. written stories, podcasts, film, design etc.), education, media, legal/law and systems change.
  • You are deeply connected with community, operating from a place of ethics, protocol and trust. You hold demonstrated knowledge of community strengths as well as current issues facing community where you are connected
  • You create collaborative, trusting and productive environments by developing relationships and approaching problem-solving from a place of curiosity
  • You have a passion for storytelling and hold expertise and experience across the storytelling sector
  • You have experience chairing or serving on boards and committees and have knowledge of the legal and regulatory frameworks associated with board leadership
  • You have advanced cultural intelligence and the ability to work with First Nations individuals and communities with diverse experiences, while centering safety and cultural protocol
  • You are a great networker. You hold relationships that are built on trust across different contexts from grassroots communities to philanthropic spaces

INTERSECTIONALITY

Intersectionality is extremely important to us. We strongly encourage applications from First Nations people:

  • with disability
  • from LGBTQIA+SB communities
  • from rural and remote communities; and/or
  • with lived experience of economic injustice and housing insecurity.

Shifting mindsets and changing systems so they centre First Nations people, knowledge and self-determination is a huge task. The more diversity and intersectionality we can bring to our Board, team and contributor network, the stronger our work and impact can be. Even if you only meet some of the experiences and skills we’ve listed, or feel that you might not entirely be ‘the right fit’, we’d love to hear from you.

Closing date: 14 MARCH 2024
