This National Reconciliation Week learn other 'r' words to move beyond 'reconciliation'.

Every year National Reconciliation Week is a reminder that 'reconciliation' is considered problematic by some. One of the reasons is because reconciliation means 'the restoration of friendly relations'. To ‘reconcile’ implies there was once a good relationship between First Nations and white Australia. However, this is not the case.

Moving beyond ‘reconciliation’, here's a few of our favourite ‘r’ words that are meaningful in building futures that centre First Nations people, knowledges and cultures. Work needs to be done and these are crucial to ensure it's done with respect, authenticity, mindfulness and intention.

Reparations

All wealth accumulated across this continent is created off the extraction of Country and oppression of First Nations people. Reparations are about redistributing resources back to First Nations people for land theft and ongoing trauma inflicted by the colony.

Regeneration

Strengthening, uncovering or restoring what already exists. When we talk about regeneration we could refer to the regeneration of people, Country, culture or language.

Relationality

Holding relationship and connection between many things and keeping balance between those relationships. This could include people, Country and stories.

Reciprocity

Reciprocity is about mutual benefit, keeping balance with all things and not taking more than you need.

Responsibility

We have an obligation to hold the right relationship with each other and with Country. As future custodians this is our way of holding balance with the past, present and future, and ensuring we do right by our communities of today and tomorrow.

Redistribute

Redistributing involves shifting wealth, power and resources back into First Nations hands to support self-determination and address colonial injustices.

Resurgence

Grassroots, community-led movements where First Nations people and communities reclaim, revitalise and embody our cultures, languages and governance.

Reimagine

Changing old mindsets and systems to put First Nations ways of knowing, being and doing at the centre.

Reckoning

Centres on truth-telling, self-determination and the assertion of First Nations knowledge systems - reckoning focuses on movements to confront the enduring legacies of colonisation, systemic dispossession and intergenerational trauma.

Revitalisation

First Nations community-led efforts to restore, maintain and strengthen cultures, languages and heritage, making sure they stay strong for future generations.Revolution Working together to overturn unfair, inherited power structures to build fairer systems.

Revolution

Working together to overturn unfair, inherited power structures to build fairer systems.

Be brave and make change by bringing these words and meanings into your vocabulary and actions – thinking about ways you can centre them in your day-to-day and in conversation with people you know.
